No more notch? More on the 2019 iPhone X

Apple’s iPhone X was a big experiment for the company and received a lot of mixed reviews, most of them focusing on the R19,000 + price tag, but the unsightly notch at the top of the device ended up looking like a design flaw to some. There have been reports that the notch may be smaller in 2019 or disappear altogether states PC Mag.

According to the Inquirer, Apple has reported to drop the notch from its 2019 OLED display iPhones just as a number of Android OEMs are starting to mimic controversial cutout.

Apple is reportedly working on a new design where the screen will ‘completely fill the fron of the new iPhones’ states 9to5 Mac. It is said however that the notch is necessary due to the iPhones X using an all-screen design. The company inevitably needed to place to hide the front-facing camera, infrared camera, dot projector, flood illuminator, speaker, microphone, as well as proximity and ambient light sensors.

However, Apple may have already figured out a way to remove the notch while still having all the needed components and keeping FACE ID. The alternative solution is yet to be confirmed.  Removing the notch may be possible by a patent that Apple has just been awarded says MacWorld.

This patent relates to displays with tiny, microscopic, opening in between pixels where sensors can be located. Digital Trends states that these opening would be too small to actually see, and the sensors would be embedded in the display itself.

What we could expect in the future

Hold onto your horses though, it’ll still be a while until we find out. Apple’s notch-less iPhones won’t be debut until September 2019, according to a report. The 2018 iPhones, of which there are expected to be three, will keep the display cut out, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He claims that Apple’s trio of upcoming iPhones will include 5.8in and 6.5in models with OLED displays and a cheaper 6.1in handset with an LCD display.

Other changes we could expect in the future would reportedly be ceramic casing, retractable screens, curved design, or bendable/foldable iPhones states MacWorld.

It’s a very exciting time for Apple and iPhone with many changes on the horizon that keeps its fans wanting more and becoming ever-loyal.
